Fernando Gaviria of UAE Team Emirates doubled up as he won stage 5 as well as stage 1 in a bunch gallop in Guilin after hard fights in the hills. Enric Mas (Deceuninck-Quick Step) retained the overall lead.
Jay Thomson (Dimension Data), Ryan Mullen (Trek-Segafredo), Roy Goldstein (Israel Cycling Academy) and Taco van der Horn (Jumbo-Visma) rode away from the gun and got a maximum advantage of 5'05'' after 50km of racing. Goldstein was first to surrender. It was all together again at the bottom of the first category climb (km 178.6) after Mullen had collected a maximum of KOM points but not enough to dethrone Guillaume Martin (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) who abandoned the jersey to Tomasz Marczynski (Lotto-Soudal) after the first category climb.
Mas was part of the 12-man front group after the main difficulty of the day 35km from the end. 60 riders gathered on the flat section leading to Guilin. Eventually, all top sprinters made it across to contest stage 5 on the eve of the grand finale of the third Gree Tour of Guangxi.
